Getting Closer

The act of porting Subtraction.com over to Movable Type has taken several weeks now, but every day I get a little closer to getting the job done. Recently, my attention has been devoted to bringing all of my old Blogger entries over to this new system. The first two months’ worth — Dec 2000 and Jan 2001 — are available now, and the rest are coming real soon now.

ICANN’t

Damn closed email accounts! The domain registration for Subtraction.com expired recently and I almost didn’t even reallize it — I had used a now-defunct email address as the main contact address and had totally forgotten that the term was expiring, so my registrar was unable to reach me. The Internet really needs a reliable forwarding service. In any event, my apologies for the errors when surfing or emailing to Subtraction.com over the past few days. Everything should be back to normal now.

Back to It

Okay, four freaking months later, I’ve decided I have to get back to blogging. Too much time has passed and there’s just been too much minutiae and trivia and inconsequentially esoteric tidbits that I’ve missed out on recording in my private little corner of the Web. This site is a mess though, and I need to sort out lots of design issues, but the posts are going to resume all the same.

Typist

dollarshort.orgThis is my second Movable Type post in less than a week, but that’s because this product is amazing. Not being much of a CGI monkey, I paid the folks over at Movable Type to install it for me, which they did in less than six hours and for a mere twenty bucks. That’s terrific enough, but the software itself also happens to be remarkably robust — just take a look at these screen shots. It’s really hard to believe they give it away free. (Actually, the authors depend on a donation system.) It’s been a blast tinkering with it, and it’s definitely set me on the path of redesigning Subtraction.com. Soon.

Harnessing the Power of Atomz

AtomzSubtraction now has search capability, thanks to the terrific technology available from Atomz. Built on the same wonderfully generous consumer ASP model as Blogger, Atomz allows smaller sites to set up fairly powerful search capabilities in no time, and for free! Within a few hours, I had Atomz running and searching content in the Post section. Like Blogger, Atomz allows site developers to completely customize the look and feel of its results, which is a must for me.

Days and Hours

A lot of my time this past week has been spent laboring over a major redesign for Subtraction.com, which mostly accounts for the lack of postings here. With luck, I’ll be able to relaunch within a few weeks. It won’t be a moment too soon either, as the shortcomings of the current design continue to pain me.

That’s not the only thing on my mind though. I’m simply at a loss to know what to think of all of this entire situation. My initial reaction to the World Trade Center attack was swift retaliation. Then everything got grayer and grayer the more I learned about Afghanistan and our role in its torturous past and now who knows what we should really do in order to remain on the side of the right and just. What’s more, like many of my peers, I’m jobless and adrift in an uncertain economic sea, which is its own level of personal discomfort.

New Digs

The last host provider for Subtraction.com was terrible — I don’t fault them for the fact that they got hacked, but rather for their rude and unresponsive customer service, which probably lead to the malicious hacking in the first place. Whatever; I’m moving on with my life, and have transferred over to Media Temple, ISP to the design stars. So far, so good — their account management tools are terrific, but most of all their customer service is a relief in its simple helpfulness. Imagine that! By the way, the transfer wasn’t seamless, as GIFs are missing here and there throughout this log and its archives. Given a few days, I’ll have most everything restored.
