Time Out

I’m so, so tired this evening, due in no small part to the fact that Behavior is in the final production stages of a site that’ll launch on 20 Apr. Also, I’ve got a big presentation on Thursday for a potential client and I’m excited and worried about it. Sometimes being in start-up mode makes me feel like I could work forever doing the work of ten designers, and sometimes it makes me want to just park my butt in front of the TV with a whole stack of DVDs.

Full Color

Epson Stylus C80The latest addition to my hardware family is the Epson Stylus C80 color printer. The reviews for it have been uniformly excellent and the price is a steal (US$150 after rebate) — and yet I’m wondering if I really need or even want this thing. Since losing my job last fall and going on the start-your-own-business frugality plan, I’ve been averse to making large purchases and it feels uncomfortable to make one like this that, while nice to have, is not entirely necessary. Right now the printer box is sitting on my floor, still unopened.

Beagle Boy

BeagleNow that I work at home and I’m here nearly all day and every day, I’ve been thinking a lot about adopting a dog from a rescue like BREW Inc. (There are some adorable dogs shown on this site, like Juan, that need good homes.) Maybe I’m just a softie at heart, but getting a pet just seems like something I want to do now.

Blackout

My cable modem service cut out inexplicably this afternoon. A call to tech support yielded no answers, only the broad solution of scheduling a service call for next Thursday — nearly forty-eight hours later. Thankfully, the connection came up half an hour ago, again inexplicably. Having it gone for even just a few hours drives home the fact that I’ve become totally reliant on this service.

Good Times

Things have been very hectic but I look at that as a good thing, actually. 2002 is bound to be a way better year than its predecessor, or at least I’m hoping as much. Things at Behavior are starting to gain steam, and the mood of just about everyone I know is markedly better than last year. At any rate, I’m back to posting here regularly.

Go West

I’m off to the Golden State today to visit some family and friends. It’s my first post-September 11th flight, and though the threat of terrorism doesn’t worry me so much, the thought of long and complicated security procedures —lots of ground time—makes me not really anxious to fly at all.

Every Sunday Is Like Sunday

Sunday has got to be most depressing day of the week, and it doesn’t help that, since daylight savings time has been in effect, night falls at a precipitously early hour. It must be these Sunday doldrums getting to me when I can’t help but think that the world has fallen into shadow, that we’re knee-deep into a potentially miserable recession, that the war we’re waging in Afghanistan is a kind of murderous folly, that the business I’ve begun might be a foolish and fruitless conceit, that my girlfriend and I are going to break up, that the Yankees are going to lose the World Series tonight.

Days and Hours

A lot of my time this past week has been spent laboring over a major redesign for Subtraction.com, which mostly accounts for the lack of postings here. With luck, I’ll be able to relaunch within a few weeks. It won’t be a moment too soon either, as the shortcomings of the current design continue to pain me.

That’s not the only thing on my mind though. I’m simply at a loss to know what to think of all of this entire situation. My initial reaction to the World Trade Center attack was swift retaliation. Then everything got grayer and grayer the more I learned about Afghanistan and our role in its torturous past and now who knows what we should really do in order to remain on the side of the right and just. What’s more, like many of my peers, I’m jobless and adrift in an uncertain economic sea, which is its own level of personal discomfort.
